Question: What can I do to keep my relationship with God from growing cold? Truth: What you stop breathing life into will eventually die. Scripture: Book of Malachi 3 warning signs of a heart that is growing cold toward God: Cold hearts forget reality. Cold hearts allow present circumstances to distort eternal reality. You cannot let what you feel in the moment make you forget what is true. Cold Hearts give God what’s left instead of what He deserves. You cannot build a deep relationship with someone you only give your leftovers to. Whatever gets your attention eventually gets your affection. Cold hearts tolerate what God wants confronted. Most major problems begin as ignored minor problems. What you refuse to confront will eventually shape you. Hard conversations are never as hard when the problems are still small. Ignored problems don’t heal themselves. Questions for discussion: 1. What are some early warning signs that your relationship with God may be growing cold? 2. What currently helps you communicate honestly with God—and what most often distracts you from listening to Him? 3. When you examine your time, energy, and attention, where might God be receiving your leftovers instead of your best? 4. August 16, 2026 - Little Books Big Message: Zechariah – When You Want to Quit
Zechariah 4:1–10
Central Truth: Don’t quit because the work is bigger than you—God never intended you to finish it without Him.
Key Thoughts
There are some things you can’t do.
Faith isn’t pretending you don’t have limitations; faith is knowing where to take them.
There are some things you can’t do alone.
Isolation is where quitting grows.
Connection is where endurance grows.
There are some things only God can do.
God’s work is done through human effort but not by human effort.
Don’t make a permanent decision because of a temporary mountain.
God remembers. Even when you can’t see what He is doing, He has not forgotten you.
Discussion Questions
What makes you want to quit?
What kinds of circumstances tend to drain you the most—lack of resources, long seasons of struggle, opposition, disappointment, or feeling that nothing is changing?
What “mountain” are you facing right now?

Read Zechariah 4:7. What situation in your life currently feels too big, too complicated, or even impossible?
Why is admitting “I can’t do this” sometimes an important step of faith?

How can recognizing our limitations move us from self-reliance toward dependence on God?

Question: How do you trust God when what you see doesn’t match what you believe?
Truth: When you don’t understand what God is doing, remember who He’s always been.
Scripture: Habakkuk; Psalm 13:1; Matthew 26:36-46; Proverbs 3:5
When life doesn’t match our expectations, our confidence gets tested and our commitment gets revealed.
4 steps to trust God when life doesn’t make sense:
1) Bring your questions to God. You can wrestle with God without walking away from God.
2) Release your expectations. Faith is trusting God’s plan when He doesn’t follow ours.
3) Surrender what you can’t control. Sometimes God gives enough direction to require trust, but not enough detail to eliminate faith. Responsibility is not the same as control.
4) Trust in what you do know when you don’t know what God is doing. Peace doesn’t come from understanding everything God is doing. Peace comes from remembering who God is.

1. When has life turned out differently than you expected, and how did that affect your trust in God?
2. What does it look like to wrestle with God without walking away from Him?
3. Which is harder for you: trusting God’s timing, trusting His plan, or surrendering control? Why?
4. Have you ever seen God work in a way you did not expect but later realized was good?
5. What are you trying to control right now that you need to trust God with?
6. What do you already know about God that can sustain you in what you do not understand today?

Question: When does God’s patience give way to His judgement?
Truth: God’s mercy has an invitation. His judgement has a deadline.
Scripture: Nahum; 2 Peter 3:9-10
Truth 1: God’s patience should never be mistaken for approval. We cannot be passive against evil, because God is not passive toward evil.
Truth 2: God will bring an end to evil. Every day God delays judgment is another day He extends mercy.
Truth 3: God’s invitation of mercy has an expiration. Don’t confuse today’s invitation with tomorrow’s guarantee.
Questions for discussion:
1. The sermon began with the question, "God...how long?" What situations in our world—or in your own life—have caused you to ask that question? How does Nahum, along with 2 Peter 3:9-10, change the way you think about God's apparent delay?
2. One of the main truths was, "God's patience should never be mistaken for approval." Why do you think it's so easy for people to assume that because God hasn't judged sin yet, He must be okay with it? Have you ever found yourself thinking that way about your own life?
3. The sermon said, "True repentance isn't a one-time event that produces temporary behavior change. True repentance is a lifestyle we never get over." What does ongoing repentance actually look like? How is it different from simply feeling guilty after you sin?

Most significant truth:Jesus is not the King you try to control. He is the King you surrender to.
Simple summary:You want a king who fixes your situation. Jesus came to save your soul.The crowd wanted power. Jesus brought peace.The crowd wanted fast results. Jesus worked for eternity.The crowd wanted control. Jesus calls for surrender.They praised Him when He fit their expectations.They rejected Him when He did not.You face the same tension.You want Jesus to agree with you.You want Him to fix things your way.But Jesus does something better.He deals with your sin.He gives peace inside you.He secures your eternity.He is not the King you manage.He is the King you submit to.
ActionAsk yourself one question.Where am I still in control?
Then act.Say it plainly.Jesus, I surrender that area to You.
Do one step this week that shows surrender.Confess a sin.Change a habit.Obey something you have been avoiding.

Most significant truth:Jesus suffered and died in your place. Your sin carried a cost you could not pay. He paid it fully so you could live forgiven and changed.
Simple summaryIsaiah spoke about Jesus long before the cross. He described a Savior who looked ordinary and faced rejection. Jesus endured brutal suffering. He took punishment meant for you. His wounds brought peace with God. His death removed guilt and gave new life. Forgiveness is free to you but came at a high price. This truth calls for a response. Receive grace. Stop living under shame. Let forgiveness shape how you live each day.
Your challenge:Receive what Jesus paid for.Stop punishing yourself for past sin.Live in gratitude, not guilt.Let the cross change your daily choices.

Jesus did not come to improve your religion. He came to give you new life.
Simple Summary:You ask a hard question. Are you alive in Christ or running on spiritual autopilot. Nicodemus looked strong on the outside. He knew Scripture. He kept rules. He led others. Yet something inside felt empty. Jesus told him he did not need more effort. He needed new birth.Truth one. Religion and life are not the same.You attend church. You read the Bible. You serve. None of this gives life by itself. You fix habits and still feel empty. Only God brings life to a dead heart.Truth two. New life comes from God, not your effort.You do not earn birth. You receive it. Jesus did the work on the cross. The Spirit makes you new. You move from trying harder to trusting deeper.Truth three. New birth requires surrender.Belief means more than agreement. It means handing control to Jesus. You stop managing your old life. You submit to His rule. Nicodemus moved from curiosity in the dark to commitment in the light.
Challenge for Action:Stop measuring your faith by activity. Ask if your heart belongs to Jesus. Surrender control. Trust Him for new life. Choose delight over duty today.

You panic when you lose what matters most. God feels that way about people. He notices one missing soul. He searches on purpose. He celebrates when one turns back. He sends you to help others find life in Him. Your response proves what you value. Stop waiting. Start seeking. Speak about Jesus while there is still time.
Clear action· Notice who is drifting.· Pray for one specific person.· Start one real conversation about faith this week.· Celebrate when someone moves toward God.· Join the mission, do not sit on the sidelines.
